| Cook Strait |
A Russian ship sank there, sharks frequent the water and the wind gusts up to 200kmh.It is Cook Strait - a 25km stretch of water between the North and South Islands of New Zealand - and, on 10 March 1999, Tammy van Wisse became the fastest person to swim across it. Her world-beating time of 6 hours and 49 minutes cut 10 minutes off the previous record held by Sydney's John Koorey. After near perfect conditions for the first half, the tide turned against her in the second and she was attacked by jellyfish. Adding to the difficulty, van Wisse made the crossing without a shark cage. "I was worried about the sharks, but Phil (Rush - New Zealand's most famous marathon swimmer) told me that they would be keeping a sharp look out," she said. "Phil has made two double and three single crossings of the Strait, so he should know what he's talking about. I was very lucky to have him in my support crew," van Wisse said. Her younger brother, John, (pictured above) swam with her for the last few kilometres to offer moral support. COOK STRAIT SWIM STATS Swim Location: Cook Strait, New Zealand
