Melbourne marathon swimmer Tammy van Wisse has done some pretty amazing things. So, when a Scotsman told her: "You're not a real marathon swimmer unless you've swum the Loch," she couldn't resist the challenge. On 12 August 1999, Tammy braved the deathly dark waters of Loch Ness, Scotland, to swim its length in the fastest time ever. It took 9 hours and 6 minutes for Tammy to make the 38 kilometre journey, in what was one of the most terrifying swims of her life. "It's a very eerie feeling to swim Loch Ness. I was in a constant state of panic," the 31 year old said. ![]() "The water is deep and black. My average visibility was about half a metre below." Swimming blind was not Tammy's only problem. Water temperatures ranged from five to twelve degrees, the average depth was 340 metres and, because Loch Ness is fresh water, she was not aided by buoyancy. "I looked up at my support crew and said: "I wish Nessie would come up and eat me right now to put me out of my misery."
When she finally dragged herself, exhausted but elated, from the water, she was welcomed on to land by a crowd of well-wishers and a bagpiper playing Scotland the Brave. It was a reception that she will never forget.
Swim Location: Highlands, Scotland
